°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ (°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳) encourages community members to participate in competitions for external research funding.
°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ publishes and maintains a list of important deadlines for research funding opportunities.
°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ applicants also need to meet internal deadlines to comply with institutional requirements.
Eligibility
°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ considers research an academic activity, and applicants and co-applicants for external research funding must meet eligibility criteria and be able to hold funds at the host institution.
In most cases, this means that only continuing, full-time °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ faculty members may apply for external research funding as principal investigators/applicants and/or as co-applicants. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ sessional instructors, adjunct academic colleagues, and other °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ staff may not participate in these roles.
If funding will come to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ for post-award administration, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ will consider °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ members as co-applicants and full internal requirements will apply to the funding application.
°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ does not provide post-award administration services for grants that are held at other institutions, unless a Transfer of Funds Agreement is in place between °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ and the host institution.
If a member of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ is serving as a collaborator, knowledge user, or other participant in a funding application, there are no internal requirements or eligibility restrictions, as long as funding is not expected to be administered at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳.
°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ staff must first contact both the Office of Research and Innovation and the BMO-CIAR before engaging in research activities with external partners that occur at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳, involve the use of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ resources (e.g., lab spaces, library access, etc.), and/or which are undertaken by an individual acting as a member of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳.
Questions about eligibility should be sent to the Office of Research and Innovation.
Contract research activities, where an external partner pays °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ for the use of space or resources, are not considered academic activities. Contract research activities may include the participation of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ staff and students hired as staff by an external partner. If you are interested in participating in contract research, contact the BMO-CIAR.
Internal Requirements
All applications for external research funding must be registered at the Office of Research and Innovation via an , a minimum of seven working days before the sponsor deadline.
Institutional approvals must be granted before research funding applications are submitted to external sponsors.
For more information on internal requirements, please consult this webpage.
Industry, government, advancement, or international funding
Funding may also come from non-conventional, or mixed, sources.
If a research project or activity requires, or may benefit from, a partnership with industry or government, contact the BMO-CIAR.
If you are seeking international funding, or are in the process of receiving a donation, contact the Office of the Vice-President External Affairs and International Relations.
Indirect costs of research
Direct costs of research include all expenses related to the research activity which are incurred by the researcher. These may be salaries for research assistants, equipment and material purchases, and/or publication costs. Direct costs of research are under the control of the researcher.
Indirect costs of research (ICR) are expenses incurred by the institution in relation to an award. ICR include facility operating costs (e.g., power, janitorial services, water, heat, phone, repairs and renovations, furniture, etc.), services (library access, internet, computer equipment), and financial administration (salaries of personnel providing administration of research funds, the Office of Research and Innovation, etc.).
Applications for external research funding must dedicate at least 30% of the budget to ICR, unless the sponsor directly states that such expenses are ineligible.
A relevant exception is Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) applications. The Tri-Agency separately provides ICR under the Research Support Fund. For information on this important program, please consult this webpage.
Tri-Agency Funding (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC)
Collectively known as the Tri-Agency, the , the (NSERC), and the (SSHRC) provide a variety of continuously evolving awards.
Currently, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ is eligible to hold NSERC and SSHRC grant funds, and we are working towards the eligibility for CIHR funds.
